Wow, did this ever take me down memory lane when I used to teach sales people in telecom about OSI models and when I could translate binary. I used to call the OSI model the great equalizer and the killer of monopolies. I always value your long view, Alistair...thanks for this reminder today of just how much work goes into making something frictionless.

OSI! My first job sent me off for training on Data Protocols, and then I promptly had to replace OSI as IETF. I'm grateful to have seen the bottom of the stack (and literally listened to the change in sound of a modem when I POKEd a register on my Apple ][.) Somehow felt like peering into the blood-brain barrier between digital and analog.
